Getting Started
This platform visualizes Placer AI foot traffic data for 1,156 retail locations across 24 major brands in the Los Angeles metro area. It combines real foot traffic analytics with ArcGIS GeoEnrichment demographics to help evaluate retail site performance.
Step-by-Step Workflow
Understanding the Results
- Site Score (0-100): A composite score based on four weighted factors: Foot Traffic (30%), Affluence (25%), Market Size (25%), and Dwell Time (20%). Scores above 70 indicate strong sites; below 45 suggest caution.
- Area Demographics: Population, households, median age, income, and spending data from ArcGIS GeoEnrichment (or simulated in demo mode). Toggle enrichment variable categories in the "Enrichment Variables" section.
- Foot Traffic Intelligence: Total weekly visits and unique visitors within the buffer, average dwell time, visitor median household income (from Placer AI), day-of-week patterns, top brands by traffic, and category mix breakdown.
- Strategic Insights: Automated recommendations based on traffic density, income levels, dwell time, retail density, population size, and visitor demographics.
Custom Location Analysis
Enable the "Click map to analyze custom location" toggle to analyze any point on the map - not just existing store locations. This is useful for evaluating potential new sites or competitor locations.
Visualization Options
- Heatmap View: Toggle in "Layer Controls" to switch from individual points to a density heatmap showing foot traffic concentration.
- Brand Highlights: Toggle to show/hide the diamond markers for the selected brand's locations.
- Point Symbology: Point size and color represent foot traffic volume - larger/redder points indicate higher traffic; smaller/bluer points indicate lower traffic.
Enrichment Variables
Check or uncheck categories to control which demographic variables are fetched:
- Demographics: Population, households, average household size, median age
- Income & Wealth: Median/average household income, per capita income
- Consumer Spending: Apparel and grocery spending indices
- Daytime Population: Total daytime pop, workers, and residents (useful for identifying employment centers)
- Housing: Owners, renters, median/average home values
- Custom Variable: Enter any valid ArcGIS GeoEnrichment variable ID (e.g.,
KeyUSFacts.DIVINDX_CYfor Diversity Index)
Publishing to ArcGIS Online
Use the "Publish to ArcGIS Online" section to upload the full Placer AI dataset as a hosted feature service. Enter your ArcGIS Online credentials and portal URL, then click "Publish Data to AGOL". The data will be shared publicly and can be used in other ArcGIS applications, dashboards, and Story Maps.
Data Sources
